I know that castelmaine electrics has wire harness's for sale but are there any reputable places in Brisbane I can get a whole new one from?

hey nes. it depends if your after originality or not. if you want to keep it original as possible then im not going to be too helpful :-/
But if you want to replace the entire system for safety and piece of mind then you can try several places that will now make up a complete loom some will even customise it to suit your needs ( efi, power everything etc) kits will range from $500-600 check out hot rod mags etc
i got a complete harness from airride technologies they are in Melbourne and i got it sent up within a couple of weeks, very very happy with the kit and quite simple to install. every wire is colour coded and imprinted with its purpose so its really pretty easy. just a couple of weekends some patience and a bit of common sense and thats about it.
several other guys on the forum have gone the same path.
Or if you are pretty handy with the sparks and wont be hooking alot of accessories up to your system then grab yourself some rolls of wire and make one up yourself, save a couple of hundred dollars, but alot more time.

yeah i probably should have specified...
I'd like a new one for piece of mind and i'm desperate to fit a V6 that a mate has but I have a stock 186 here that i'm having to chuck in so the loom will need to fit the red. I have a sparkie mate down the road with a HR to cheat from so dean your idea to have a go my self might be it.
Anyone have a Diagram? only extra will be a stereo.

as torque suggested the workshop manual has a diagram but you can also use the gregory's manual as they too have wiring diagrams.
one thing to bear in mind at this stage is that if you are intending to pop the V6 in you will ned to include some extra wires and relays for fuel pump, EFI, etc etc at some stage. so maybe keep this in mind when re-wiring for the red.

there was a place I got mine from about 9 years ago called electra loom or vintage wiring harness co..
my harness was a exact replica (they were pretty fanatical about exact replica's)
it cost $260.00, dont know if they still exist.
I guess you could pull your old harness apart and copy it, it may seem complicated but its just a matter of finding simular connetcors and wire, cutting wires to length and taping them back together and putting the connectors on.

err yeah the original hearness..... umm my daughter learnt how to use wire snips. the cost me lots.
my son put in a 10cent piece into our cd player (brand new astra) and now I have to shell out for another one.
I have locked to door to my toys now!!

I sent them a email to see if they still do the harnesses, they were selling the harnesses to alot of overseas customers and also did the cloth wrapping on the earlier harnesses to exact origoinal.

a (the?) source for original harnesses is Classic Wiring Looms: http://www.classicwiringlooms.com.au/If you want to go 'modern' then there is the Painless kit which is available at a few places including Castle Auto as you know. Also you can have a look at the AirRide kit: http://www.airide.com.auor this simpler (but not necessarily cheaper) alternative from Ultimate: http://members.dcsi.net.au/ultimate/I'm currently using an Air Ride kit which is good but I will also have a closer look at the Ultimate for my next project. looks like the company split as they were the same place from memory, the reply from the email was- refer to- http://www.vinwire.com.au/index.html FC main harness is $272 The logo at the top of the page is the same as the sticker on my harness. |
