im looking to put a set of better extractors on my red motor, just wondering what the best ones are to look out for, and any other information you think is important before i go out and grab a set.
is there anything i should be aware of when buying a 2nd hand set? am i better off sourcing a new one? what price bracket should i be looking at for a good set? i guess many of you would have already done done this common mod, any help would be greatly appreciated.

thanks.

As well as suiting your motor, it has to suit your engine bay of your car - as far as I know no other holden red motor extractors suit an EH.

Try the wanted section in the forum on this page http://www.ejehclubqld.com for a second hand set.  Second had sets has be cracker or warped at times.

Other than that I think they are only about $280 new.  People tend to go far names like pacemaker, genie etc but i think most new ones sold be of a high quality.  You also don't want to go too large with the primaries or it will be harder to drive off the line.

Bob,

Yes, so long as both engines use the earlier 9 port (or later 12 port) head.

9 Port heads were fitted to all Red motors.

12 port heads first appeared on 'Blue' Motors in early '80's Commodores and have found their way on to a lot of earlier bottom ends because of their improved design.

Here's an image of the 9 and 12 port head, courtesy of our friends at Oldholden.com

Would pay to check what you have fitted to your car.

Cheers,

Craig.

I have a Holden 202 red motor, with a 9 port head ( dividers cut out ), and found that the PACEMAKER ( PH5004 ) extractors fit the motor and FC engine bay just right !

Check with pacemaker re: the model number....but I'm sure that's right.

Cost be around $395, but very nice and worthwhile.   Just pick up any current streetmachine mag, and no doubt you'll find there advertising.    Cone over Pipe technology or somehting like that, creates less disturbance in the gas flow giving better performance.

I only bought them really, cause they were the only brand that would fit my car.

I have a set of RED motor extractors if you wish ( 2nd hand ), they are GENIE fom memory, and fit a GTR Torana Engine bay, so no good for the FC, but if you want them let me know !

Cheers

Dave's probably right.     They fit the LJ torana not the FC.   The FC extractors will fit just about all early holdens up to and including EH's.

When I say FC extractors, I really mean the Pacemaker PH 5004 that suit red motors and early model holden bodies.

Basically the main difference, is that the FC - EH extractors fit very closely to the engine shape and squeeze down past the subframes and firewall, where as the LJ torana extractors come off the motor a bit further, and sit out wider from the engine and would ultimately hit your subframe.

If you are on a budget ( who isn't hey ? )  search nearby wreckers.   When I say wreckers, I don;t mean the late model wreckers in your nearest City, I'm talking about ringing the wreckers yards out bush....in the country towns, as they deal more in older cars.

Our local ( I'm in the country ) wreckers has had Minis, FC's, Broughams, Old Holdens and Fords, Zephyrs ect.    I tried ringing a city wreckers and was told they stocked n0thing older than 1987....that's a VL commodore !!!

Good luck, I hope you find what you are after !
