Hi all, I've ordered a new set of quarter vent seals from rare spares, which should be arriving shortly. What I'd like to know is how to install them, and how to get the old seal out?

I'm a bit apprehensive, as a while ago I went to a  wrecker and got a wind deflector out of an FE, and proceeded to completely massacre the vent trying to get it out.  Roll Eyes

Not wanting to do this to the FC, I'm wondering how to get the quarter glass out? While I'm at it, I'd also like to install the wind deflector. How does this fit in?

I hope someone can help! Pics would be great!

Hi Josh,
I have removed glass from quite a few quarter vents (in search for a decent pair) and it doesn't seem to hard. There is usually a bit of a gap on the ends where the rubber has shrunk or perished (this presumably explains why they are usually rusty as hell in there when you finally get the glass out). Get yourself a can of WD40 with the straw thing fixed to the nozzle then pump the section full of the stuff through these small gaps. Leave it to penetrate for a while then start gradually prying the glass away from the metal section with a small screwdriver or whatever placed in the same gaps at the ends. If you do it gradually from both ends, push and pull a bit, eventually the glass just pops out without any damage to glass or quarter vent. Unfortunately, I can't tell you how to put it all back together again since mine are still being rechromed so I haven't gone there yet.

hi Jonno,

I have only done this the once but found it to be pretty simple.

The key was to drilling the rivot out of the vent window and this allows the window to come out.

Then the old rubber can be removed, the new one glued in and replace the window. The rivot in the window was the hardest bit to replace, you need something solid to put behind the rivot and then to spread the other end with a small hammer... Don't get the paint work.

The other guys may have any easier way as like I said i have only done this the once.

As well as drilling out the rivet as Jason said (replacements available from Rare Spares, you need to remove a nut from the bottom of the shaft that goes inside the door. You'll need to remove the door trim to get at it I think. These are usually pretty rusty so give it a good spray with WD40 and leave it to soak in for a while before trying to undo it. Be gentle when removing it because the shafts are easily broken (speaking from experience).

My experience is with an EJ but I think they are pretty much the same.

I guess while we are on the subject (sorry for hijacking the thread Josh..but it may be relevant), how have people dealt with re-chroming the little part that is fixed to the zinc plated section of the window i.e the other part of the hinge not fixed to the glass?

My chrome place insisted that this should be removed from the zinc frame so I guess I'm going to have to find somewhere to rivet this back together again with blind rivets (I assume the rivet for the hinge itself...or indeed pop rivets no good here). Do any places do these kind of jobs?

Johnno,

I tried the 'main rivet' replacement on one window and found that it was too difficult.  I distorted both hinge pieces too, so that the quarter window would not go back together properly.

My solution was to follow CraigA's advice: drill out the rivets of the small piece you're talking about, leaving the main pivot rivet intact.  To refit, I used two pop rivets, removing small pieces of the new seals until they fit flat.

Most nut and bolt specialists will have the blind rivets.
The trick to replacing the large rivet is to use a G clamp with a ball bearing.
Take the quarter vent out of the car for the best results
