Can I use a column shift for a M20, so long as I set up a separate lever for reverse?  The common parts shared with the synchro 3 speed seem to say yes.

If it is possible, it would give me 4 forward gears on the column with a smaller reverse lever on the floor.

Not so much impossible, but you would be a pioneer if you did it  Cheesy
I had a Speco Shifter on my torrie that had a separate reverse lever, it looked quite trick and had all my new passengers asking questions.
The hard part will be getting the column set-up to work.

this is possible, i have seen it done before

it is a very complicated as you will need to make up new linkages. also what makes it harder to do is the fact that you need the right bend on your linkages ....
remember that having the wrong lenghth and bends may kauze the gearbox to stuff up as having the wrong length will mean that as you go into another gear it may not fully select

maybe someone can elaborate on this as i seem to be running out of knowledge

the only other thing i can do is go around to the uys house and grab his number, as i think its probably better to talk to someone whoz tried it

I had a SPECO shifter like  that years ago as well.

One biggie though.
It has a gate in it that stops you selecting reverse unless the main shift is in neutral.

Not sure how you would do this with separate mechanisms.

Without that lockout, potential simultaneous forward/reverse selection would be very trick and spectacular.

Mine was on a saginaw, the aussie box may not allow this to happen, internally, but check it out.
