Fitting the Boot Lock

Is there an easy way (or any way for that matter) to fit the boot lock.
For the lock to sit flush with the panel (not using the boot trim) I have ground off two tabs on the lock and filed the boot lock hole a little larger, to compensate I made a spacer that fits on the inside behind the panel. It would seem that you need a colonoscopy scope (bum camera) and child's hands to fit the bugger though.

 hi stinky, went through the same problem, i used a boot lock from a EJ/EH sedan,  i found i still had to carefully file out a small section of the hole in the boot for the two tabs ( on the lock body to slot into) and grind / cut off approx 1 inch from the end of the lock. the tail peice that mates up with the mechanism. perfect fit!

Thanks Dean, it's gettting the clip onto the lock to hold it into place that is the problem. I have ground two of the tabs off the lock body and filed the boot hole a couple of mm.
It all sits fine and works, but getting the clip on the back of the lock is hard part.

It sure is!  Definitely not a job for when you're tired or feeling a bit impatient.  Just think, some poor bastard spent all day every day doing this job at the factory...

Very easy to remove, and a right pain to put back in.  You really one hand to keep the lock barrel in place, a skinny hand through the access hole to keep the locking plate square, and a third hand to give it a bit of a whack with something.  Once it grabs on to the lock it's a lot easier just to tap into place.  It's getting on with enough of a hold in the first place, of course...

I bet they kept anything heavy out of reach of that guy! Still, one of those locks could do a fair bit of damage if thrown properly  
I have already walked away twice, but I have the third hand issue solved with a clamp. I just need a skinny hand now.

Getting back to the factory bloke, a tool that holds the perpendicular edge of the retaining clip would make an easy job of this.  If it was done before the boot-lid was fitted to the body, the boot-lid could be stood up in such a way that the lock drops in vertically, meaning one less hand would be required...
