Upper tailgates FE or EK.. which is better?

Hello,

I have 2 upper tailgates for wagon.

the FE/C upper has a lip for a seal on it lower edge.
the EK one doesnt.

For all intense purposes these both leak.

Does having this weather strip on the FE/FC item make a difference?
Or was the EK item improved?

any help/advice appreciated.

Hi Ed,
You're right.....they both leak.
The FE wagon had the 2 part seals & FC onward had a single double lip seal, You can't use the later seal on the FE gate without removing the extra bit.

will use the FC/EK upper in that case, as seals may be easier to come by.

Hi Ed,
there is a slight difference between a fc upper tailgate & an ek upper and that is its mounting point to the hinge.
the fc screws on with tapered screws and the tailgate upper has countersunk holes. The ek has normal holes and uses normal hex bolts. Just in case you want to keep yours stock ?

Hey Ed,

Weld them both together hinged at the top llifted by gas struts. Gets rid of the hinges at the bottom and stops the leaks... Probably my next mod.

I'm actually very fond of the quirky FE - EK tailgates,

even the 2 position posts which hold the upper tailgate.

u cant get these cool things on a new wagon!

If I were to have a one piece door I reckon a side hinged door would be the go, I think streetneat has pics of a hearse featuring this.
