I'm getting a mechanci friend to go over my red 202 and just make sure all is ok....the engine recently came out of a GTR Torana and is on good working order, but I just want him to strip it dowm and re-check all clearances, rings, bearings ect ect.

What I need to know....is what details should I give him...(ie).....timing BTDC or ATDC and all that stuff....

The motor will be running to XU1 spec, as it already has a XU1 (Wade) cam and triple CD 150 strombergs, YT Roller Rockers and YT Head.

Any help, info, numbers, or specs I can give him would be really appreciated.

If none of this makes sense I apologise, as I'm no mechanic.

Cheers

Mark

I agree...but there is another saying....."If it aint broke, Break It, then fix it"

This is the reason I'm getting a mechanic Friend to go over it for me, rather than take it to a engine shop.

If I take it to KEC ( Kostecki Engine Centre - Perth ) " Known from Drag Racing circles and very reputable ", they will charge $1500 plus parts just to strip and inspect and put back together, where as my friend will do the same work for next to nothing.

The reason for me having the motor checked out by someone in the know, is that I'll be dropping it into $25000 worth of FC with a $8000 paint job, so I don't want to have drive it for 1000kms to find out something has let go, and needs to come out again, risking damage to paint and panels.

I like to do things like this saying ...." Do it right - Do it Once "

Hey Mark
Maybe this link will be a starting point , I just typed "torana xu1 specifications" and it took me to this site.

http://www.supercars.net/cars/1972@$Holden@$LJ%20Torana%20GTR%20XU1x.html

Hope this helps

Did you run it before it came out of the GTR?
IF i was spending your sort of dollars on the body then I would also spend a few more to make sure the engine ran like a rocket.
Its worthwhile putting in new rings and bearings no matter how the engine measures up.
While the head is off then fit stainless seats to run unleaded (premium) and do a crack test.
There is only one way to do the cam timing - align the dot with the crank dot. Your mechanic mate will know all this if he is worth his salt.
Once its running in the car then maybe dyno it to get the dizzy timing and carby jets right.
Thats my thoughts,
Earlee.
