my theory is the older the car, the more it is worth modyfying, and the newer it is the better it is to keep it standard. if I had a dollar for everytime someone told me my car would be worth a mint if it was all original I would be a millionare. next time you are looking at cars for sale compare modified versions to standard. A 2003 corolla or pulsar with a fully sick exhuast, subwoofers, lowered, mags, pod air filter etc. will be lucky to get any more than a grand less than your nannas stocker, on the other end of the scale if you take a look at cars around 70 years old, unless they are some rare limited production exotic, they seem to fetch four to five times the amount of stockers in the same model, I agree that if you are going to do so much work to a car that it's only worth doing it if your keeping it till the end. I once had a friend with a FC sedan that he hotted up when he was young and then spent a fortune restoring it when he got older, having original vinyl recoloured by a place in victoria several times till he was sure it was the same as day one, rechroming all the badges, grill and bars, taxi rail, air cheif, nasco everything, start adding up the sums now, the colours were then matched to factory on everything and the body painted. the end result was a car that looked like the next stocker in line at car shows but with different colours. Dont forget, a good running efi 5 litre V8, or a rebuilt hot red costs around the same as rebuilding a standard grey. and you can now get a CD/mp3/DVD player for about the same money as a air cheif radio, a four speed for less than the price of a crasher, and it is cheeper to weld up the badge and trim holes than fetch good trim and rechrome the badges. I bet there are resto jobs out there that cost the same or more that would pull less money than this modified.
