I'd appreciate the assistance of one of our Gurus who has a NASCO parts list to identify my towbar.

I would like to know whether my bar is a NASCO accessory.  It doesn't have any markings that I can find, but the most distinguishing feature is that the tongue has a bracket welded onto the near side for the mounting of the wiring harness socket.

It's a silly thing, really, because it means that the tongue can't be removed from the car without disconnecting the wiring.

If it's not a NASCO bar, then I intend to cut this bracket off - I have already mounted the socket on a bracket that I have pop-rivetted to the underside of the boot floor - out of sight.

However, if it is the real McCoy, I won't butcher it.

Unfortunately I can't get a picture of it at present, so I hope my description is enought to identify it.

Can somebody help me out, please.

Well, this must be some kind of record for this site - 33 people have had a look and there's not one reply.

That means either:
1. Don't know
2. Don't care
3. What's a towbar
4. Nasco didn't make one
5. Nobody can understand what the hell I'm talking about      or
6. All of the above.

The angle grinder comes out tomorrow.

Martin, Ive checked all my records and cant find any record at all of a NAsco tow bar.  It is possible that all tow bars were supplied by aftermarket houses.

Hi guys.

I've been away at Bathurst, & didn't see this post until now.

To answer your question, Ken is basically correct in that GM-H didn't make or sell any Nasco towbars for the FE/FC when new.

Nasco didn't get involved with towbars, at all, until early 1964, when they released a range of Nasco branded bars to fit back from EH back to FE.

Part No.s for FE/FC are 7427328(sedan), 7427329(wagons) & 7427327 (utes & vans).

Because these were sold when the FE/FCs were getting old, it's unlikely many people shelled-out for the genuine item in 1964 ,with many cheaper (non-genuine) alternatives on the market. They would be very thin on the ground these days.

I've decided after what you guys have written, and on having a think about it, that it's not an "old" towbar anyway.  The real old ones I've seen have had a fixed tongue, whereas this is detachable in the current style.

And it's shape is interesting, so I'm not going to hack it after all.  I'll leave it as is, but simply not attach the plug to the bracket.

In the absence of a digital camera, I got to work with my HB lead "camera" that looks remarably like a pencil, and came up with these drawings.

Rough, but you might get the idea.

Clear enough to me, Martin.  And for what it's worth Picasso is not someone I'd want to be relying on for schematic drawings anyway Grin

Hi Martin,
For the wiring plug, you could use the long lead method they use on some late model cars. It's basically just a long flat lead wired into the lighting circuits inside the boot and long enough to reach the trailer connection. Because it's a strap shape the boot closes down on it when in use and you just disconnect & stow in the boot behind the spare wheel etc.
You'll also need a connection point for the safety chain to make it legal.

Thanks for the suggestions Leigh.  The wiring harness was already in the car, through the boot floor, so I'll use it.  The bar actually does have the safety chain point - not shown in my side view, but that's what the "dag" hanging of the front in the top view is supposed to represent.
