 G Day fellows. Here is a photo of the gaurds after I striped the paint off and theres no bad rust only light; It took 3 hours each gaurd. I'll keep you posted. Regards. Leon

WOW. Those are some of the cleanest guards I have ever seen. If the rest of the car is like those, half your restoration is done.

:)Thanks Alex. Its all not that easy. Its time effort and keeping at it and if all goes well I should have the guards and the front end etch primed' primer undercoat' guide coated and if the weather is fine i'll hit it with the colour coat(Levant green). I'll keep you posted. Reagrds. Leon |

Nice and clean, Leon. I too would like to know what you used to strip the guards. I'm into collecting this sort of info at present, before I tackle mine.

:)G Day fellows. RE the paint stripper. I used steptone automotive paint stripper from supercheap. I apply 2 coats' one takes off the first and some of undercoat and the second coat takes off the rest then I use a course grade steelwool with a bucket of water (not a hose) and rub hard. When applying the stripper do it in the shade not in the sun as it dries the stripper very fast and makes it harder to remove. I hope this helps. Regards leon |

Thanks for the info, Leon. There's quite a discussion about sandblasting and paint strippers in the Restoration Help board (under the subject line "sandblasting  ") that suggests paint stripper doesn't work so well on nitro-celluose paint (as originally applied to FEs and FCs) Was your paint work the original? I use the same method as Leon, only I use thinners instead of water, I've found that the red primer / undercoat is much harder to remove than the topcoat.
Hey Leon, are you going for a fleet of green FE's???

:)G Day fellows. I use the paint stripper because I don't have a sand blasting machine I've seen panels that have been sand blasted and some have been put out of shape. I know I have full control when I do it myself my way. It may be slow but the job gets done and I know it's done right. Besides I enjoy doing it. I had no problem striping the old paint off. As far as I know it's all original paint work if it wasn't I wouldn't have the car. Answer to your question Garry, When FEE NO.2 is finished it should look like your FE. Hey Leon,
looks great. That's what my FC came up like when I used paint stripper. I still think that gives the best results (as per the earlier post in the restoration section). I think the photos show the excellent results you get with paint stripper.
Yes, I agree, you need to have 2 goes to get the original paint off, that red oxide undercoat is very stubborn.

I'm using acrylic as I fine it to be realy easy although i've never used anything else. 2 pack seems to be to modern for the old girls although I think its a good modern paint with good out standing properties.
