Diff Housings

Is a HR diff housing different to a EH/EJ one and are the backing plates the same on them?  

I need to know how I can tell what the housing on a wrecked EJ is, the backing plates look  the same as HR ones (they have the lumps front and rear where the handbrake cable comes from).  

If it is an EJ and not a HR, can I fit 9/16 HR wheel cylinders to it or are the brakes comletely different.

The easiest way to tell the difference is the HR does not have a square pattern where the backing plate is bolted to the diff.
HR top bolts are wider at the top than the early ones.

Hi Guys

Just to clarify that, FE to FB have a square bolt patterned rear axle bearing retainer plate & EJ to HR have the pattern where the two top bolts are further apart  than the lower two.

When converting to front disc brakes it's alway better to change the rear end to the EJ to HR type & then you have the later duo-servo type brakes & can fit the 9/16" wheels cylinders & matching shoes.

There are minor differences between the EJ/EH rear end & the HD/HR item. The main ones are in the leaf spring mounting & the use of self-adjusters on HD/HR.

Are HR drums self adjusting?

What needs to be done to chage a HR drum brake front end rear end (confusing eh?) to suit disk brakes?  Is it just a matter of changing to 9/16 wheel cyinders?

Hi Burnsy

You have to change the brake shoes also.

The shoes are different in that they don't have the small cut-outs where the larger cylinder's push rods fit into.

The 9/16" cylinders have button type pistons, which push directly against the shoes.

Thanks for the offer Col.  I am not chasing anything in particular at the moment - mainly due to my returning to uni and the associated income of bugger all.  Current mods being done are out of need as my car is my daily driver.

Would take you up on the offer if you were over in the west!

Got my HR diff and brakes, now just to rebuild them!

Can anyone tell me which way to go with the rear handbrake cable, do I use the HR one as is on my original mounting points or do I need to change cable sheaths or anything?
