Here is a picture of an Air Chief radio I recently acquired. Looks to be aftermarket period fitment - it has an inbuilt speaker and was ounted under the centre of the dash.
After cleaning the valve sockets and pots I applied power and off it went. I repainted the cabinet in hammertone paint however I am missing one of the knobs. If anyone can help with a replacement it would be much appreciated.
Cheers,
Craig.

Nice score. Is it 6 or 12 volt? Holden did sell the Airchief radios as aftermarket items. They were also fitted to cars other than Holdens. (ie Chevy, Pontiac etc.) Regards Alex

Radio is 12 Volt. Has anyone seen one before?

Not seen one before myself, though I think I remember seeing one in an Accelerator magazine. Perhaps RET can take a look for us. Regards Alex

Craig,
Will have a shufti in the Accelerator collection and let you know what I find. I'm sure I have seen it in there. The ones we normally see here are the ones designed for FE and FC, but there were a variety of generic models as well, for fitting to the rest of the GM stable that Holden assembled or sold, ie Chev, Pontiac, Vauxhall, Bedford etc etc
cheers RET

Here we go fellas. I had this already done. Someone else wanted an ID of a similar radio not long back, so I looked into my Accelerator collection & this is what I came up with. It didn't show up too well on this site as I had to down size it, but if you want me to send it full size to you, Craig, just let me know. Rob J

Hey Craig. My memory just kicked in re this radio. I remember a former member of the club had one of these. I can't remember the guys name, about 15 years ago. He lived in Blacktown and was only in the club a short time. I distinctly remember that his was also missing the lower section. I thought his had a beige colour hammertone. I wonder if it is the same radio? Try some AWA knobs. Not exact match, but would look OK till originals turned up. Regards Alex

Hi All. Craig, don't forget a lot of the knobs on the old TV's were exactly the same. I don't know if you guys have "Tip Shops" over there (shops where people are employed to scab stuff off the tip to recycle it), but there are always plenty about. I will keep an eye out for you. Rob J p.s. Shouldn't be too hard with both my heads, hey Craig?

Thanks Rob. I'll keep a lookout for one of these shops - I've seen them down in Melbourne but can't recall any in Sydney. You wouldn't have any cousins, uncles, or aunties with some spares would you? Now I AM in trouble!!! I really appreciated you posting the advert. RET has a copy so I'll grab it off him. And Alex, the radio was fitted to the wagon, so its definately not the one from Blacktown. The original finish was a silver/grey hammertone, very similar to the repainted one. Cheers, Craig.

Hi Craig. I will ask all my relatives down here & see what they can find. It may take awhile though, as you guys are probably aware, we are one big happy family down here (If you know what I mean). Rob J

OK, it's called the "UNIVERSAL" Car Radio, and was released around March 1958. Part number M32124 (Model "AJS", 12volt).
Here's the ad for it with the rest of the FE range.
cheers RET

And close up....
The editorial of the March 1958 issue of Accelerator (source of this ad) makes specific mention of the new addition to the radio range, hence the approximate date.
cheers RET
