Cool pic of FE and FJ outside the Oakleigh Motel, on the Princes Hwy near Melbourne circa 1957

National Archives site yet again.

as Oakleigh has had tarred roads for a lot of years it would be great if one of you Melbourne lads could take a pic now as a comparison as that motel was still there when i was in Oakleigh in the eighties.

Have taken a shot of the motel this morning and it will come as a real surprise to see how different it looks. Can someone please tell me how to reduce the file size without losing quality. I've tried cropping and resizing with the microsoft photo editor but it ends up looking like crap. I'm doing this at work (shhh don't tell anyone) and don't have any other imaging programs.
cheers,
Leigh

Have managed to get it reduced by a work colleague who has Photoshop. Thanks for the offer anyway Craig.
I've also got some pics of around the back by the rooms from when I had the wagon in the Toyota ad. will try & get those up too. Spoke with the owner when there and the history of the place is that it was built for the '56 Olympics to help with tourist accomodation. Was used afterwards as a general motel and because of the industry in the surrounding area managed to stay open. Most of their business nowadays comes from special events like the Torago commercial and from companies & groups hosting theme based events. Whilst all plumbing & wiring has been replaced, and comfy beds are standard, all fittings & fitout is still circa 1950's.

interesting to compare the pix.  hasn't changed much.

what was the toyota tarago ad?  is that the one where they could fit the town population in the van, or another one?  if its still running, i'll have to look closer for a holden wagon. Cool

How cool is that.
Looks like it just needed a lick of paint.
Thanks for the pic.
I remember the Tarago ads, they were cool.

Here's the pics from round the back.
The Tarago commercial being shot was the one which went along the lines "everything old is new again". Started off in the city & went back in time with the hippies & Kombi van, a guy on a Harley then back to the 50's.
About 10 of our club members brought cars along. They only wanted FE's & FC's for some reason. Number plates were changed with cardboard overlays and they set up the back of wagons with 50's suit cases & picnic baskets, wooden tennis racquets and cane fishing poles. The usual holiday gear. Even put luggage in the boots of the sedans which never got opened.
The scenes around the back were shot during the day but they made it look at night by using big movie spotlights inside the units with the curtains drawn and having the old outside lights on. Only the bit wheer the Tarago drives in the front was done at night (dusk). It was an interesting day seeing what goes on behind the scenes and I was amazed at what detail they go to just for a 45 second commercial.
cheers,
Leigh

We are 5 hours drive west of Brisbane, but our tv comes from Alice Springs & Townsville/Mount Isa.  We are experts on all the shops in Alice Springs & Darwin if you need to know about any bargains. Wink

What a great thread! Excellent reading and viewing.

Did ya keep the picnic basket baskets? Brett from the Vic Club would love to talk to ya. Wink

I think WE all understand why they only wanted FE/FC's
The producers were obviously looking for a quality production.

They are great pictures and were great promo for the club but the add went buy that quick you had to be quick not to miss the quality vehicles. What a shame we are still not able to see that fantastic  red and white wagon in VIC plates any more but that is another story heh Leigh!

We lucky blokes in the NSW Club get to see it now all the time tho, so it's nice to be able to share, isn't it? Grin

Brett, was a certain Elk Blue FE Special Sedan in that ad as well?

cheers
