I have replaced the rear transmission seal (ex Rare Spares)on my FE, checked the breather is not blocked, checked that the yoke does not have a groove worn into it, made sure the transmission was not over-filled but it is still leaking transmission oil. Can anyone offer suggestions please.

Terry,  Here are the options - If the box is leaking between the seal and the yoke, then either the seal is faulty or the yoke does have very minor wear on it.  Generally the seal would have worked for a short period of time & the started leaking. On the other hand, if the box is leaking between the outer surface of the seal & the aluminium casing of the gearbox - this indicates that there is damage in the aluminium body, possibly when the old seal was removed. This would have leaked almost immediately after you put everything back together.  If this is the case, you will have to remove the seal and put a new one in and use loktite around the seal. May even be more effective to get another extension housing and put a new seal in it, then put it in.    Ken

Ken Ken,thanks very much for the advice.I've cheched things out based on your advice and I think the seal must be the problem. I have ordered a new one and have arranged for a qualified mechanic to help me install it. I will let you know how it goes. Thanks once again.

terry,
how did you go with your seal? I've replaced mine twice in 12 months (ex Rare Spares) and still have a major leakage problem. The seals looked like they'd been sitting on the shelf for a long time and I suspect the rubber had perished. Have you found an alternative supplier? cheers dave
