Are these really a set of grey motor extractors?

They are for a red motor, the red did come out with a 138 in the early days.

really?? a red grey?? what models did these live in, and what are the differences to the grey?

i had an lc torana once with a red motor that was a 138 not sure if it was original option, but they are same as any red motor extractors by the look of them,not grey

Unless i'm mistaken the LC Torana had a '2250' decal on the rocker cover and a '2250' badge on the front guard.

There was most definately a 2250 (138 ) red motor powered Torana produced. This model was only available in LC form, and was discontinued in the LJ series, where the smallest engine I can recall was the 173.

Not sure if the 138 head had smaller inlet/outlet ports which would make the extractors useless (unless modified) for the larger engines.

The 138 red was available in the LJ series, and continued on into the LHs built for export.  I have an idea that an export Kingswood also had this motor as an option, but can find nothing on the internet to support this (after a five minute google Roll Eyes)  IIRC it was in HQs built for South Africa, but I'm not sure of that.

Anyway, they're not exactly a performace powerhouse.  If you're going to go to the trouble of fitting a red in an FE or FC, the 149 (which is small enough not to need engineering certification) is a much better option.

The HQ's that went to South Africa had a Chev six. It was a 4.3lt inline six. These cars were called the "Kommando" range. I had a brochure for them at one stage. I still have scans here somewhere. Didn't I send the brochure for you to copy, RET? I can't remember.

Rob,

You did and I hadn't forgotten.  It was a 250ci 6 cylinder.  But I am sure that I have read somewhere that the 2250 was fitted to at least one of the Kingswood HQ-HZ export series.  I remember thinking what a dog it must have been Wink  I'll have a little look about in my book collection and see what I can find.

Yes the HQ was exported to South Africa, but only with the 138, the HR was also exported to South Africa with a 253 V8 and 4 speed opel gear box. If i'm not mistaken it was only available in the wagon. I clearly remember reading this when i was an apprentice mechanic in the early 1980's. When i told my boss he said the info i had read was correct and was surprised i found this info because not many mechanics knew about this.He even asked me in which book i read it.
The only floor shift opel gear box i ever worked on was a 6cyl HD or HR wgn in the late 1980's.(carried over to the HK).
I  have also worked on a HJ or HX wagon with a 253 V8 and 3 speed manual column shift and also a F#~D XB wagon 302 V8 3speed manual column shift.
I do'nt recall any 138's in LH Torana's but did see some early LH's and early HX's with front drum brakes.
Sorry for getting carried away but you may find this useful or file it in the useless information bin.

Also i did see a Chev sedan in the late 1980's, looked just like a VB commodore with bow tie badge on the grille and the engine looked similar to a Grey 6 and no emmission control on the engine. It was a South African personal import.
Did you know that the current model Corolla and Camry Sportivo's are made in South Africa. NOT THAT IT MATTERS Grin Grin Grin

 seb if that chev commodore was biege or cream,its now in bob ridleys collection..he calls it a chevodore
has chev badges on hub caps & steering wheel centre as well

The HT owners manual makes reference to a '130' (which I take to be a misprint) engine. I would think it should read 138 and would be an export engine.

I had another look at my HT owners manual, p80 lists a130 c.i. for export territories only. Engine prefix 130E. Page 81 lists a 130ci , designated 130 HC. 8.8 to1 Comp. ratio. Bore, 3.03ins., Stroke, 3.00 ins. BHP 90, Torque 120. Theyve mentioned a 130 4 times. Surely the wrong info. given to the printer? Can someone work out the capacity from the dimensions given?

The 130 CID Red Motor did indeed exist as an export only engine.  I travelled in a HT Staion Wagon Taxi in Fiji fitted with one.  3 mates & I went on the Fairstar in 1985, all of us were heavily into the HK/HT/HG range, between our friends that stayed & us we had 12 at once.  Anyway, we singled out this taxi, ignoring the EK and other Jap cars for this HT.  The driver was impressed with our knowledge of the model and let us inspect his (poorly maintained) taxi.  The engine block had '130' cast into the engine identifyer pad and the engine number started with 130.  I don't remember the rest of the number - it was the first 130 that we had seen (and the only one thus far) outside of the mentions in the workshop & owners manuals.

I have the exact same senario Spinner, Got off the fairstar around 85 ,Was into Monaros at the time so I singled out the HQ, this one had a diesel pumping away up front .
