G'day guys !
I need an advice how can I get rid off the old roof deadener completely.
So far I cleaned up with a chisel, most of them came off.
After I used a wire wheel on a drill, I tried the paint and rust stripping wheels and an orbital sander too. But still not good enough to stick the new deadener and self sticking heat mats from Car builders.
Feel and looks reasonably clean, but when I do the masking tape probe still a lots of little piece sticking to the tape.
So not clean enough. They definitely done a good job 65 years ago.
I thought maybe I just paint over and hopefully all the little leftover bits will stick to the roof.

The sound deadener is "bituminous paper": essentially tar-soaked cardboard.
You would need mineral turpentine or similar solvent to remove the residue (and I hope the interior is out of the car).
Another idea is to warm it up with a hot-air gun, gently, to avoid blistering the paint (or even park the car in the sun) and use a paint scraper. Then you'll still need to use turps for the final clean. Then wire brush, then Deoxidine, then a thin coat of epoxy primer, and the new sound deadener will stick to the roof like the proverbial s... to a blanket.

Yes, a hot air gun works really well, the bitumen has a fairly low melting point and will scrape off easily once heated.

Tonight I bought some acetone from Bunnings just for try it. Done not much at all. The forecast for the weekend : sunny ! ( Queensland : ) I will try the heat treatment.

Lazlo ..Its bitumen based ,so after heat/ scraping clean up with kerosene , or diesel , kero is better cause you will probably have to clean up the diesel residue . Acetone will only harden it ...keep well Vern ..

You are right Vern. After I tried the acetone and started scraping the bitumen was harder but came off (broken off) a bit easier with the paint scrapper.
I will try the kero.
I cleaned up so far 25 % of the roof 75% still to go....

Originally the rear parcel shelf had any vinyl cover on or just was a painted metal shelf ?

Looks like mine was already modified, when I removed the vinyl I have a metal shelf, like the dash"board". And the vinyl was tucked under the window rubber seal.
I think I will clean it up properly and just paint over the metal.

Lazlo ..The parcel shelf was primed when the body was ,then finished matt black. I got a embossed sheet from motor trimmers , cut a paper pattern , then cut the sheet and put in with contact adhesive ..its black , my trim is fall red/black ..its about 2mm thick , like a heavy cardboard ,has a pattern in it like leather grain .with the venetians its not really a visible item. .

I'm thinking about just painting the parcel shelf with the same matt black like the dashboard. Simple and clean with the two speaker covers.

Vern my Fe definitely not a⁵ stock any more with the chevy in it.
I just found out today the upholstery guy don't want to do my car hood lining any more, his got a bad back and don't want to spend that much time in the car at the moment.
He gave me an other upholstery guy phone number. Beenleigh upholstery (very good reviews). The trouble he can't book me in before January.
Anybody knows a good trimmer in Brisbane ?
And next question : Anybody used the C&G upholstery (eBay store) hoodlining ? They asking $175 for it. Sounds reasonable.

I found a car trimmer in Capalaba "Annvid", they done Fe headlining before. They have good reviews too.
So hopefully they will do a good job.
