Having sold my Parts Catalogue, [1st 20 yrs], I am trying to identify this Kit. My guess is that it belongs to the "red motor", however, it may suit other models. Help please! Huh  Kevin.

Kevin,

I think it might be for the grey gearboxes - it has the transverse selector shaft oil seal and the cork seal for the selector lever shaft.  But I'm mystified by the O-shaped paper gasket.

The tin is for a n FX-HR front universal joint repair kit, including grease nipple, with retaining grooves in the bearings.

Here is the contents of the container;  Maybe there are bits from both suggestions above?   This came from a clearance sale & now I'm thinking its just a collection of bits. There are 2 small ball bearings, which on their own, seem out of place. Thanks for the responses, any further clarification would be appreciated. Kevin.

I decided to have a "women's look" @ the exploded view of the grey motor gear box. I feel confident that there is a home there, for all these parts, [ even the 2 ball bearings ]. Soooo.. maybe the part No. in my original post should state... something like " gear box overhaul kit"? Maybe someone might post the actual wording for part No.  7421879.  Smiley  Kevin.

Repair kit, front universal joint with grease nipple, fx to hr with retainer ring grooves in bearings.     Actual reading is   “FRONT with grease nipple”.   AL.

Thanks Al. I have now come to the conclusion that a gear box roller kit has been placed in a repair tin which originally contained an FX-HR Front universal repair kit. The Part No. on the container does not fit the contents.  Thanks again. Kevin.

The two ball bearings are probably for the indents on each of the selector shafts, grey box.

Kevin,

The two balls are for the speedo drive gear and the cluster gear shaft, to locate them in position.
Curiously, your "kit" has three (not four) circlips for a universal joint,
four (not two) synchro energising springs,
two (not one) grey mainshaft bearing retaining circlips (outer race),
two sets of mainshaft pilot bearing rollers,
three mainshaft snap rings (you normally need two for a grey gearbox),
one outer race circlip for the input shaft bearing, and one retaining snap ring,
one transverse selector shaft oil seal, two selector shaft cork seals,
two expansion plugs for the cluster gear shaft (all as expected),
and one red motor distributor-to-block gasket.

I'm not going to count the cluster gear needle rollers.

Nor am I Rob. I have not rebuilt a grey motor gear box, otherwise I would be of a  similar "guru" status.. My Cousin served his time with these models & he looks after this for me... gives me more time "with the pigs"
I just was unsure of what was in this "Pandora's Box". Thanks for the details. Maybe someone out there in "Holden Heaven" might have use for these parts?  Kevin.

Hi Kevin,
I am likely to be rebuilding the odd box in the next few years and some of those parts could possibly be of use, although I wonder if I would be better sourcing a rebuild kit.

Anyway I would be happy to buy them if you are willing to post to SA. Would you mind letting me know what sort of price you are looking for. By PM if you like.
Cheers
Clay

I'm not going to count the cluster gear needle rollers.

That made my OCD kick in  Roll Eyes

The counter gear holds 19 of the little rollers at each end (total of 38 rollers). Diameter 1/8". You've got 16.
The clutch gear main shaft pilot holds 13 of the larger rollers. Diameter 3/16". You've got 28, though two are really shiny in the photo... not sure why.

Cheers,

Harv,
Those two "shiny" ones....I think they are the slightly tapered retaining pins for the idler gear shaft?? You can see grooves down the side of them to help retain in place (I have my own OCD issues apparently)

Good to hear someone may find the parts useful.
The container itself would look cool in a display cabinet.
