G'day all, Restoring door hinges, has anyone used the rare spares kits? I have found some of my van front door hinges but I'm missing the screws to the A pillars I know originally they were cross heads but I noticed the rare spares ones are a straight slot, just wondering what others have done for these hinges I'm also chasing one more hinge I'll be at the nsw club meeting if anyone can help out thanks.

I used Rare's Door Hinge Repair Kits & Door Hinge Spring Kits. Both worked well. I had the original screws for the pillars but was missing some of the shaped star washers. They were a problem to find on their own. The club could be your best bet. For me, the cross head screws are probably easier to tighten. A fastener specialty shop may be able to source them & they would surely have the hex head bolts & spring washers.

The allen key headed bolts sound a bit like the after market HR disc rotor bolts I bought at my local bolt shop . I have used the pin parts of the Rare spares kits ,as when I pulled my van hinges apart I found the pins riding out and totally worn on one side . So I put the new pins in and tacked them so they would stay in .

pretty sure they are 5/16 unf countersunk bolt. most industrial bolt suppliers(or a good bolt shop) should have them. they would most likely be allen key head though. i actually like the look of them better myself. if its a full on resto ,this wont help you .

I reckon you use a readily available flat star washer which gets pressed in to shape on torque up.

I have asked Ken to put some aside for me ,as the allen drive ones I got from Rusty were to test fit the doors before paint ,but not original , I didn't want to end up with mixed screws..I haven tried to source dished star washers ,some one will enlighten us on this forum no doubt ..Vern

Just make sure you heat the washers before you torque them up😏

The ones Ken has include the washers ..I haven't looked for dished star washers for any reason ,probably cant buy them Holden prob did their own thing,,I was thinking getting old screw ,countersunk plate steel ,or old hinge ,put external star washer on screw drop into countersunk hole ,make sure its central, head taper should do that, bit of heat and press it in and form dish shape ,lot less stress on washer ...Vern

Those washers, if made from flat washers will lose the twist on the spigots and will not lock so best to lock the bolts in with something .
