Identifying SB Chev Capacity

Without wanting to sound ignorant, how do you externally identify the capacity of a small block Chev motor?

Is it like a red motor, ie cast into the block, say "307", "350" etc, or is it through the engine number sequence or prefix?

Any pointers would be appreciated before I head out into the big wide world to purchase a motor for my V8 FC project.

To identify Chev motors which were supplied to Holden for HK HT HG the engine number prefix started with their original capacity either 307 327 350. HQ prefix for the 350 chev was QU. Some other things to consider when looking for a motor are the cylinder heads and sumps as there are a number of different types. I'm 99% sure the way to identify the capacity of Chev imported motors is by the block casting numbers.

Thanks for that. I have to use a 305 or 307 for RTA compliance, and was just wondering how easily the motors are identified.

I need the HQ type sump for the CRS crossmember.

Heads are yet to be decided.

Do the Aust 307s have a 2.45" main journal diametre?

You can also ID the capacity and year of manufacture etc of the SBC by the casting numbers. You'll find heaps of info here: http://www.mortec.com/castnum.htm
