I think it's got to do with the pointer for the shift quadrant.  The HK pointer is a raised section on the gearshift surround, with an infilled white painted line.  The HT-G pointer is your classic needle, held onto the gearshift surround with screws.

yes as ardiesse says the shift pointer is on the shift honeypot, and shines a light onto the PRNDL quadrant which is on the dash woodgrain on a hk. The ht has the orange needle selector down lower and incorporated into the dash fascia. the HG also has the indicator needle in the fascia, but is the first to have the trimatic lower gates, and is much harder to get as they were in a limited run before HQ was introduced, and much harder to convert into floorshift column
HK is harder to source as well due to powerglide being an expensive option, so not as many were made, and with the set up, suits many conversion in earlier cars such as chev F100 and many hot rods and is also most attractive. also the inhibitor switch is unique to the HKTG series, those alone worth $125 all day everyday
if I knew how to post up pics, I could show you the differences as I have all here in stock and some modified already
