Saw this at Shepparton swap and got talking to the owner. Apparently his uncle or some other relative worked for the company that made these.
The owners name was William E Yates according to him and this is where the WEY comes from

That sounds more plausible than most other guesses. I always thought it might be initials based on the dots between the letters.
Great detective work Ken.

Don't know what the E stands for. The guy could not remember his middle name.

This has been discussed here as well but if Waggot Engineering in Melbourne was responsible, what is the Melbourne suburb that starts with Y?
The Sydney workshop is in Alstonville.
I don't think Yarraville would be a candidate.
I have never been convinced by this argument.

Yes, I think your version is more convincing, Ken.

Merv Waggot's (Waggot Engineering) workshop was in Yagoona, a suburb of Sydney.

His brother had a company named Ken Waggot Speed Equipment in nearby Belmore.

Both Ken & Graham have passed away, however Ken's son Graham has retired to the far north coast to Alstonville (near Lismore).

I always doubted the Waggot version of WEY, but it was the only plausible solution until now.
