Back in the olden days when I was working on cars I have a vague memory of the engine bay colour (Apart from the firewall) was black on older Holden's like HR's and FC's. I'm helping a friend with some work on an FC and the paint inside the engine bay is the same colour as the lighter colour of the two tone.
So Black or colour?

Hi Oldfart
As far as I am aware the engine bay should be black but others with more knowledge may be able to clarify this.

The response to that link was for late 59 FC's. early FC's did have body colour firewall and skirts. There are a number of different paint combinations of firewall and skirts through the FE FC range. Late FC was when GMH finally decided on black firewall and skirts for the next couple of decades.

What about the aluminium tag on the firewall, was it painted the body colour as well? It doesn't look right to me but the paint looks to be original. The subframes are painted body colour back to where they bolt underneath onto the body. I'll chase up the body number to see when it was produced.

Mine has black firewall & same over the plate.

BODY:   FC 225-31880-S
TRIM:   274-842
PAINT:    256 - 2100
INSERT:   253 - 5775

Not real sure on the date now.
If it's the original black it would seem to indicate 'late' 59 Sydney model.
Some old handwritten notes say -
Two tone interior code 842.  Factory build/paint from end 1958 to May 1959.

The 59 FC wagon that I wrecked was a black firewall and tag.

FE plate blurry but original.
