Can anyone tell me if mini tubs are even a worthy consideration when it comes to wider rubber selection? Or do I just have to bite the bullet and go with a new rear rail set up??
Doesn't look like I'll gain much from minis..

You gain about 20mm I can get 245 under there now.

not to mention the a big difference in cost, and engineers the tubs only take time and the cost of the tubs them self
if you modify the rails, you need the diff and rails engineered, if you are already getting a custom diff made then move away, if not i wouldn't

unpick the rails and move them inboard,cut the edge off your tub then fit another set cut on the outboard edge,presto factory look and 305s

Thats what I have done, only now, 305 in 15" are no longer manufactured. You have to go taller rim size Cheers Brett

There are a number of factors at play here that puzzle me and although I havent had a look at the rules for modified production vehicle since it has been updated and joined Australia wide I would still imagine it hasn't changed to much. is moving the rails closer together accepted ? I didnt think it was! I knew kicking them up was ok ... so how does track width work here with the negative offset on a 305 wide rim and say 195 up front. and the rear wheel had to be no more than 2 inches wider than the front I thought . 255 fronts aquaplaning the rear with 305 wide tyres under an 1100kg would be an issue right. I would love to know how the hoops to jump through here should align and what your engineer actually says.. im just about to do a four link that will involve kicking the rails up higher .ive offset some rims with a large dish and I have an early Hilux borgwarner diff that was 1350 wide and im shortening 20-30mm more. but its just not getting the look. if im going to cut the inner guards to square them and kick the rails up I may aswell move them in aswell if its legal. ive been in a position many years ago where I was involved in an accident that I wasnt to blame for and there was the chance of it being a fatal. the police had impounded the modified car I was driving and were trying to find a reason to convict me . His exact words were .look its not that we dont want to book you its just that we cant find anything to book you for... the engineers certificate matched the car but if it didnt and that person died I would be jailed for manslaughter... so I guess im asking can we play by the rules and legaly do a certified tub job ?

On a side note What's legal today maynot be tomorrow. And I dought you'll ever get a 305/ anything road legal An educated guess would be 285/30 would be the biggest legal So an 18 wheel would make that the same as a std commodore wheel

I wouldn't be going a 305" tire but just enough to get "that look".. I hate the fact that the wheel tubs on these from factory are so small. Just want them tucked in and away. I was thinking moving in the rails slightly (2") and leaving that factory look to the floor etc, thinking it may not be noticeable when going for engineering or being acceptable for engineering. Plus Id be putting new boot floor in because of commodore tank.

Hi Scoop; Mate I am not sure if you would have the room to come in 2" either side if you are going to put a commodore tank in they take up a fair bit of room; I can have a look under the back of mine if you like and maube send a photo. Have a look at JB's build thread I think he shows a photo of the car on the rotiss with the tank support in place. Regards Neil H

commo tank o0nly just fits with standard rails i moved my rails on my van in 60 mm aside years ago and no acommo tank wont fit

Another thing people forget is the diameter of the tyre Std ford/commodore run 25.5" the newer ve 26.5 Where as the fc/fe is 23.5

Hi Guys I've fitted a 75 litre tank out of a 1977 W123 into my FE sedan. Mounts on top of the diff hump behind the rear seat as it did in the merc. Spare wheel wont fit now in the original spot,so might end up fitting the merc boot floor with the spare wheel recess in it....

Fitting a tank in the trunk behind the seat, comes under different guidelines Not 100% but I think the rear wall behind the seat has to be solid and not open like it is stanard

Yeah have been reading the NCOP, trunk has to be sealed from the cabin.Fitting a steel fire wall behind the seat to replace the old fiber board cover that normally lives there. The merc tank also has a internal venting system to dump fumes to under the car through a valve thingy.
