Has anyone ever fitted a Red6/Trimatic combo to an FE/C without having to transplant a bigger trans tunnel, and if so how did it go?

I thought heard once someone did this and only needed a bit of persuasion on the tunnel with a hammer.

Hi Stinky

I'm not sure if it is any help or not but I don't think that you would be able get the clearance that you need without some modification.  In my old FC, I fitted a 202 with a toyota 5 speed and was able to get extra clearance simply by making a cut up the middle of the tunnel and then carefully jacking the tunnel apart using a Porta Power (or Enerpac) jack.  Then all that I had to do was weld a strip of steel in the formed opening.  This way was really easy (only took me an afternoon) and I was able to get the box right up high in the correct position.  I also was able to carefully jack some inward bulges into the inspection cover which still allowed it to be removed when necessary.

P.S. I also cut out the section of subframe that follows the profile of the tunnel underneath.  The open ends of this subframe need to be capped so as to prevent the entry of dirt and water causing rust.

Hi Stinky,

I have ran a 2 speed and a three speed trimatic auto, the 2 speed fitted in without modifing the tunnel only had to belt up the floor near the bellhousing and cut the  subframe x-member away as Chuck has explained.
The Trawmatic I had to cut out the tunnel and welded in an EK auto hump, tried fitting the three speed without modifing the floor but it hung that low you wouldnt drive over a house brick.
After 2 Trimatic autos stuffing up I have now fitted a 5 speed Celica manual which fitted in the hole perfectly.

Thanks fellas, I have a CRS tunnel ready to fit, I just thought if I could get away with the original, the car would be on the road sooner.

I,v learnt the hard way and reformed the tunnel three times,  Angry a lot of unnecessary work wish I listend to people and fitted the larger tunnel the first time. Embarrassed

I am not connected with this site but the topic of motor and gearbox conversions was part of a buisness I had years ago.
The crossmember that travels from one side of the car to the other and is used for as ancorage point for the lower subframe legs and handbrake crossmember is a vital part of the structure of the body. When a tunnel is enlarged or totally replaced, a new section should be fabricated and installed. This use to be required to pass an engineers inspection.
Tunnel replacement is also related to pinion angle, The angle a motor is installed on matches that of the diff at ride.Ensuring proper alignment of the tailshaft uni's. Otherwise excessive wear and vibration will occure.
Something not mentioned is location and support of the new rear gearbox crossmember.
A piece of steel spaced off the underside of the floor with bolts through it will not pass either.A support frame from the main crossmember to the one directly under the seat and welded securly with side mounts to bolt a new crossmember is the best approach.
