G'day Guys,

I am looking for a set of "early" FE hubs & brakes to fit to onto my FJ ute.

I have read that they will bolt straight up, i would imagine these would be sitting around in peoples sheds due to many fitting HR front ends.

I'm happy to pay accordingly + freight, so if you have a set i have the cash and can do direct deposit.

Cheers, Jack  Cool

Yes they do bolt straight up, but they are not as common as you would think. These have been desirable since the sixties and even a lot of FE's now have the later hubs fitted because of the cost of the bearings and the fact that the later hubs and stub axles are very cheap.

Ken,

Thanks for the info, would you know if i could bolt the later FE/FC stub axles (hubs, brakes) straight up to the FJ crossmember?

No you can't - that's the point. The FJ stub axle is totally different to later models. It just so happens that early FE bearings are the same as FJ. Later FE bearings changed and stayed the same even into Commodore.
But FC, FB, EK, EJ and EH stub axles will fit into early FE making the FE easily upgradeable but not the FJ.

Ken,

I found this following post on the FJ forum.....

My old front end had been converted to 13in wheels
I believe its just a matter of taking out the upper and lower pins
removing the old stub axle and hub and putting the FC one in its place
I think the tie rods fit the new steering arms ok
I'm sure someone will correct me if I'm wrong

That's why i just wanted to double check, but i may still look into it when i get a chance.

Thanks again mate.

That's an interesting claim - I've never heard of it being done before.
Checking the parts book, the upper eccentric nut and the lower bush are the same between FJ and FE so the whole stub axle will bolt in as claimed in the post you refer to.
The stub axle itself looks entirely different between FJ and FE and the one thing that can't be checked from the parts book is whether the angles are OK.
From that perspective it would just be a matter of getting any early Holden stub axle, bolting it in and checking the king pin inclination (seeing whether the wheel stands up straight or not within the adjustment of the eccentric).
I will try to find out from some FX FJ people I know.

There is a set advertised in the July 2012 "Drive Chatter" newsletter of the Berrima District Historic vehicle Club Inc at berrimadistricthistoricvehicleclub.org.au

It is over 12 months old, but the guy might still have them.  The for sale ad is down the back of the newsletter - page 15.

Good luck.

Gary,

I just phoned this other guy who had an advert for the ealy FE hubs, drums and bearings and he said there is an error in the advert as he does not have the hubs!, but does have the drums and bearings !

What other bits do you have with the hubs? EG: drums, backing plates, cylinders, bearings !

Let me know and hopefully we can work something out, i can do direct deposit.
