Does anyone know if there has been an issue with syncro ring retaining circlips?

I am rebuilding a spare box and found both syncro ring retaining circlips have been welded in place - I assume to stop them from being pushed out by the sycnro ring?

Was a real pain to remove and the resulting damage to the long gear unit that houses the syncros was terminal  Angry Lucky I have a spare.

Of the many boxes I have worked on, I have never seen this - has anyone else?

Cheers,

I remember the father in law bagging out the holden box compared to his ford consul or some old ford car in comparison. I think it was mainly when towing and up hills etc. Do you want me to ask him?

Common modification for racing crashboxes.

The easy way is to give them a touch with the mig/stick at a few points around the ring. This tends to cause big changes in the temper of the ring, leading to localised cracking and failure. Some nasty pictures of what happens next here:

The harder way is to braze it up.

Looks like you are on the money Harv & Gary.

My one was brazed I think as the weld metal was brassy looking.

I checked your gearbox guide Harv (which is very comprehensive  Smiley ) but didn't see any references to welding but it sure looks like the FX/FJ guys are right into it.

Thanks for the replies.
