On the fe I noticed the other day it has a switch to the left of the column. Is a white push button switch. Would this be a normal place for the heater switch or is it likely something else.

Sounds like it is something else. My old FE had a warmaride resistor type dial switch in the dash, right side of the column. dealer fitted.

cheers

Could be for the horn, mine had the same but I found a broken wire under the dash so that solved the need for it.
