I picked up the head from the machine shop this morning. It is obviously cracked and pitted.
Not sure whether it is actually repairable or not but the shop is exclusively for head repairs so im assuming
they know what they are talking about.
Also, the crack test cost $70 and would be $600 for total job including machining and replacing valves and seats ready for unleaded.
HuhHuhHuh??

Still trying to decide what to do!
I have to say i have learnt quite a few things lately besides the internal workings of a grey motor.
I have learnt that people really  " do care " especially when someone is down- The forum members have certainly proved that!
I have many public and private offers of help and advice and good wishes and its really lifted my spirits.
I also learnt that i should probably " stay away" from the keyboard when im feeling pretty ordinary !
Never the less THANK YOU !!!!

$600 for a reco head is pretty good. The one I've just had done cost about $800 but that had a couple of small "extras" done to it. For a standard engine I'd probably trust the machine shop regarding the crack.

I had a head done up a few months ago.  Crack tested, surfaced and hardened seats fitted for ULP.  Cost $550
