Hi All,

I have plans on my wagon rebuild that I want to bounce around to see if anyone has done similar and then determine what bits need.

I basically want an original look but with everyday driving comforts. The running gear is red with trimatic, I already have a HR front end with HR disks, and a HK steering column and steering box with auto gear selector.

Power steering is a must, so I'm keeping my eye out for a HK power steering setup for a red motor.

Has anyone ever pieced together this combination, and if so, what am I going to need? can I use all the HR steering setup or do I need to collect some HK idler arms or whatever? thanks

Tony

I'm no expert, but as I understand it you need HR pitman/idler arm combo to suit a HR f/e.  HK will probably be larger and won't suit.

As far as power steering is concerned, from speaking to people who have done the HK steering conversion it does make the steering significantly lighter.  Given the relative rarity of power steering units for these older motors and front ends, I'd be inclined to build it and try it out without waiting for a p/s unit to turn up.  Power steering can always be retro-fitted.

Just my 2c,

Tony,

How is that power steer going?

How about grafting in a Jaguar XJ front?

Very similar to HR front except has two mounting "snouts" rather than outrigger.

You would need to fabricate upper shock tower mounts (relatively easy)

Rear mounted steering rack.

4 pot brakes!!  Shocked

I've read about some of these x-members being narrowed as well (I don't know how safe this is but apparently it gets done).

5" stud pattern tho, could probably get them redrilled for Holden.

I've just managed to snaffle Jag front and rear ends!!.. no they arent being fitted to the project.... at this point in time.

Cheers

A Jag front end is 5" wider than the HR, and has Chevy bolt pattern.
The crossmembers can be narrowed but then the power steer can not be fitted, a nother rack has to be adapted.

HK-T&G power steering was a pain when new, the crossram systems had a problem with seals leaking.
This system was first made available late in EJ production and listed as an EH extra.

thanks John,

does anybody know if I can use a pump from a later model with these pieces to build up a working system? I have the HK steering box already and with HR front end (thanks Slim...)

Any ideas if this set (on ebay link from John) looks complete? thanks

G'day Tony,
Just wondering how the HK steering box fitted up & are you using the complete column with the shift selector? How is it for length?
cheers,
Leigh
