Hi all.Has anyone done a conversion from standard globes to Halogen globes but maintained the original Bosch headlight fitting and just changed the globe?I am installing the headlights on BlackFC and noticed that an aftermarket Halogen H4 globe fits (basically) straight into the reflector and with a small addition to the original globe clip makes for a simple conversion.The wiring appears to be roughly 1mm which should handle the 4.6A on high beam and the reflector is steel so I can't really see any other problems.Would be ideal to have a relay installed as it is probably stretching the capabilities of the headlight switch and associated wiring.Any advice welcome.Cheers,Jamie.

Hi Jamie.
Have not done the H4 conversion. The standard Bosch headlight globes are 45-40 Watt.
I put in Halogen Headlight Bulbs 12volt 60/55 Watt with the Ba 20d Base from classicandvintagebulbs.comhttp://classicandvintagebulbs.com with no problems.
Or I know where you can still get original bosch bulbs from.

Jamie did you end up going with the Halogens?

I was looking at my lights today and toying with the idea of halogens or something else (complete rewire) but retaining the outer shell of my old globes.

Great if you can keep me posted, I'm interested to see how much of a difference they make.

I'm toying with the idea of retro fitting a HID kit into mine.

Thanks for the info Stewy

I might grab a set closer to when I'll need them and see what they're like, If I'm not happy I see about fitting a set of HID's instead.

I would recommend the relays - I think the switch will break down eventually - wiring should be OK though as you suggest.

Those ones on ebay have a different connector and you would need to change your bulb holder or wiring.

Thanks for the heads up Stewy

I'll reassess later on down the track when I'm rewiring the car and go from there but I'll more than likely retro fit a HID kit in.

Hi Stewy,
If the Halogens are only as good as a sealed beam you've got problems.

They should run rings around an old 70's sealed beam, even more so with a couple of relays straight from the battery.

my brother is always tellin me to run relays (hes a bike mechanic)
he said the switch will get too much current
(i have halogens obviously)
dads said they never had any back in the day
it all makes sense now
you confirm this
just been too lazy
always wondered why the dash lights freak out when adjusted
im on my second switch
thought the first one was just old
puttin in relays now when i can find where to hide them

Hi Gaz,
Has been a long time since my LJ torana, and maybe I thought they were brighter than what they really were.
I just went and compared the lights with my VE and they are quite bright.
Might have to think about a relay because it sounds like they could shorten the lifespan of the headlight switch
