I took out the old starter motor and replace it with my one from the wagon... Wont need that one for a while Tongue Tongue
Anyway the standard kicked over no troubles after the swap Grin Grin
Today i took down the starter motor and first thing that I found was this as I pulled off the rear armature cover. There were other bits of paper in there but this was the biggest piece

The brushes had good contact but they were quite worn and one had  a knick out of the middle of it. . I have never seen the insides of a starter motor before so I don't know what they should look like or what should be clean etc. I have posted some shots of what I thought were susupect.

It did not have a seal for the armature cover and water has gotten in and the is rust on the parts as pictured.





Is this salvageable???






The inner coils that are screwed onto the casing had loose outer coverings and some of the outer covering was peeling off.


The retaining clip at the end of the spindle was loose. It did sit straight but had a lot of movement in it.

find a old school auto elect.
machine/or clean up the com on the armature.
get him to growl the armature for shorts.
brushes/should be easy or file some to fit,
2 new bushes...
nearly reco for another 50000/mile.

than lucas.

Hi Nick

I just picked up some old Holden parts, including a Bosch  reco'd starter. Not sure if it is off a grey or red, U-EED 0,8/12 R37 ( can someone help).

IF it does fit a grey it owes me $30, it's yours if u want it.

Hi Andrew,
The starter motor you have is a Bosch for FB,EK,EJ.  EEDO.8/12R37

FE,FC Bosch is EEDO.8/12R27     I don't know if they can be swapped, don't see why not.

Isn't it the other way round 3 grey and 2 red?Huh
And the EK starter has 4 brushes not 2 as in the FC starter and should not be a problem to interchange.

The FB EK/Ej can be used instead of the one used on the FE/FC.  The look is identical apart from a small chamfer on the dust cover.  The later starter has 4 brushes and draws less current.  I used the 4 brush motor in my FC.
