With regard to the steering wheel, there is a guy working under the name "alien retro columns" that can build a period correct collapsible column.

I reckon anything is possible Nes.. I know Fatboy adapted a factory column shift into a 4 speed auto shifter, and Kathi and John did it on one of their cars.. the van??

It takes a bit more time to make new mechanicals work with old controls.  The Van has little chevy v6 and t700 auto with rack and pinion.  Most people think its stock until you pop the bonnet.  It has a standard looking column and bench seat as per Kathi's design criteria.  Its so nice as we have been able to produce what we feel is a more traditional look without using a B&M shifter or using bucket seats.  However, this what we like.


That column uses a modified ek auto column but I have done another using a standard FE column and standard gear shift lever.

If you are using rack there is no room in the engine bay for the auto shift mechanism.  What I have done is:
* brought the lever to operate the auto inside the car
* adapted a cable to operate auto (the van's cable runs under the carpet and pulls the auto shift lever from behind -  It would look better if it went to through the firewall and pulled from the front).
* made a new shift gate to make sure you are in the right gear
* made sure the neutral/reverse light switch mechanism works.
* the van use an EK auto gear indicator but you could use LEDs in the speedo for a more stock look.

This can be done by anyone who can operate a hack saw, file, MIG welder and has a vague idea about levers and ratios.  Oh yes I would put aside about 20 hours as well for the first time.

No build thread specifically on the T700 to column shift but if you start looking around page 12 of http://fefcholden.org.au/forum/index.php/topic,13040.220.html and work through a few "silly posts" there is some info in there that will get you on the right track.  We're not really the type to document or take lots of photos of things as we go along - we never think about it until after it's all done.

I did take a few more pics, but none of interior.
This was back in 2007, and I can recall pics appeared in a magazine showing it with hubcaps on.
Not sure of mag or issue though.
I don't believe he is a forum member.

nes, my experience (and probably most others on this forum) is that the only way to get engine mount positions correct is to trial fit the motor getting height and for/aft placement perfect. Then tack weld your mounts in place on the crossmember. You can then strengthen them once the motor has been removed. My opinion would be that if you installed engine mounts from a photo or even from dimensions, there is a high possibility that they will not be right when you put the engine in. The only people who can successfully place engine mounts without having a motor in place are those that have a jig properly set up for the purpose.
