Is it worth putting anything on the manifold gasket when fitting to engine & if so what is best?. I have got some "Maniseal" here.

No not really - the gasket will be fine by itself.
I have had trouble in the past with manifolds not being level. That is if you put a straight edge along the flanges, and the inlet and exhaust manifolds are not level. This means that the gasket continually blows out where the clearance is highest. If this is your case you need to either machine the manifold faces level or get another manifold.
