Lamp Mounting Rubbers on Rear Number Plate Bracket

I need to take the lamp socket off of the above bracket.  This is held on with 2 rubber stems that are triangular shaped on each end and a step in the middle.  As these are hard they need replacing and they will break when I remove them.  I brought a kit from Rares however there are 4 rubber pieces. These are the same shape as the originals but cut in the middle (giving 4 bits).  I hope that description makes sense.

How do you use these rubber supports to attach the socket to the bracket?

My rubbers (and lampholders) are also unusable, and I can see no reason for the rubbers.
Can anyone explain why they are there?
It's very easy to do away with them when you replace the lampholders with a modern equivalent.

I am assuming that the rubber mount is used to minimize the vibration on the lamp thus extending the life of the filament.  It is certainly easy to solid mount it.

Yes the rubber is their to isolate vibration. I have not seen the Rare Spares kit so am not sure how it works. An easy way is to get a later model lamp holder (EH to HR I think) - It has a number of advantages
1. It has rubber isolators which go into the original 2 holes in the bumper eyebrow
2. It has a plastic globe holder which wont be all rusted up like the original
3. It has an earth lead from the globe holder which eliminates the small piece of brass which acted as the earth on the original.

I can supply some of these if needed ($10 each) and they will suit everyone but the fussy like me, who must have the original equipment.
I think the rubbers from the later model holder can be used on the original to make it work as well.

Rares do a universal bumper rubber Part # MC1038 which i used on my FC. They are just like the originals.

Thanks for all the replies.  I have it sorted now.  While the rubbers were still flexible I do not think they would be flexible enough to take out refit.  I wanted to take the lamp housing off the bracket  to clean the contacts under the brass strip as the lamp was slightly intermittent and I am sure when I go for a RWC in the next 2-3 weeks this would fail.  I solved the problem by soldering a small length of flexible wire between the bracket and lamp bracket.  It is interesting Ken that you mentioned the later Holdens have a plastic socket.  Mine has a plastic lamp holder clipped into the lamp bracket  and held in with a circular metal piece which goes over the lamp. It appears to be the original fitting.

And  - der - the small rubber pieces I mentioned in my first piece have nothing to do with mounting the lamp socket.  Two of them clip into the bumper bar to stop the number plate rattling on it.

Use a LED replacement globe and no worries then.

The late FC's have a plastic light globe socket - as will all the dash globe sockets. All FE's and early to mid FC's have metal globe sockets.
