Hi
I need some advice on removing coil springs from HR front end. I don't have a spring compressor and the ones I have seen in the shops don't seem to be the correct type.
Is there any problems associated with using a jack to take the pressure off the ball joint?
What does the correct spring compressor look like and where can I get one?
As always any advice appreciated

put the car on stands and use a trolley jack to lower the lower control arm slowly.
or if the front end is out of the car you can use allthread bar up the centre after removing the shock absorber.

as fchoon has said with the following introduction. You will need to have the car on stands or supports that are quite high. You will need at least 300 mm under the ball joint.
Before you support the lower arm with a jack, loosen (don't remove) the lower ball joint nut. Give the stub axle a rap with a heavy hammer just near the taper for the ball joint. This will break the taper lock. Now put the trolley jack under and support the spring and remove the nut. If you have the jack at right angles to the car, it will travel inwards as the lower control arm drops down.

If you are putting in lowered springs its heaps easier to install.

just put new springs in my fc.had no running gear in it.
used a sash clamp,worked a treat.... Wink

my advise is very simple. If you are worried then do not do it. I got a mate to do mine and he used the shockie and a clamp. There was not much pressure at all on the spring. He said the new springs don't have as much pressure while the old ones you need to be carfull of. Anyway I will be doing the process described above by using a jack under it to put them back in. I also noticed the spacer for the top of the spring. I assume that is to set the ride height. Good luck.

Hi perth ute.
Insulator on top of the springs i think were so the spring didnt rattle and sqeak.

Replaced the coils today with 30mm lowered Kings springs and new shocks.
Going to have the rears reset to match.
