hi

has anyone fitted an early 80's hilux diff? if so, what gearing and gearbox combo worked?

Yes I have got one fitted , but not run yet car is in bits. You can get 3.0 to 6.0 gears so whatever your need there is a gear.ford stud patterrn ( 2wd), Much lighter than 9inch and not far off in strength. Prior to 78 (rn25) is 1370 drum to drum, good for 8 inch rims (hard to find) post they are 1420 as per standard diff. I am running turbo 700 box but u can run whatever you like  Smiley 3.9 gears from a cressida cheapest and best for all round

Gearing will be determined by what you want to use the car for, gearbox would be personal preference as they all have a final 1:1 drive (unless there is overdrive, but that's for highway driving). Wheel/Tyre size will also determine your gearing to an extent.
I guess you need to be asking yourself
1. How will the car be driven when finished (short city trips, country/interstate trip, a combination)
2. What sort of engine RPM do you want the engine to be doing in top gear (1:1)
3. What wheel/tyre will you be running
You should be able to work out a diff ratio to suit from there.

something tall cos im in middle of nowhere, all country driving mainly, if 1:1 top gear id probably go for 3:00 to 3:23 or even 2.98 but i will be running a five or six speed manual if i have the v8 or an auto if i have a turbo, so id probably get the thing in there and work out ratios later, as i am not near finished yet lol. was thinking or IRS for the FE but a lot of stuffing around for me. no engineers around here, but i want to run to adelaide a lot (5 hour drive) so needs to be legal. was just wanting to know who is using them thats all. they are pretty good, have it in the buggy with the v6 and 5 speed M box, and is pretty good sideways  Roll Eyes
