Speedo problem

I am having problems with the speedo on my FE. It had been idle for some years and when I got it rolling again the speedo made a noise. I sorted that out by greasing the cable as per the GMH manual. Everything was ok for a few weeks then the noise started again and the cable eventually broke. I replaced it with N.O.S. from a club member, but it still makes a noise. Re-greasing made no difference. I have now disconnected it at the gear box.
I cut the original broken cable 100mm back from where it is inserted in the speedo head and it seems to spin ok. It also spins ok in the casing when disconnected at both ends.
My question is: GMH manual says don't let grease enter head, but would a squirt of WD40 or similar into the head help and has anyone had a similar problem?
I might add that I replaced the original crossply tyres with low profile radials which affected the MPH reading. Would this also have had any detrimental effect to the cable, causing it to break.
Any feedback would be appreciated.

I had a similar problem, it was the cable being loose on the speedo head and the cable was on a too sharp angle on its approach too. Re routed the cable, WD 40 the end of the head and tightened up so it didn't move... fixed ! But it could be the head is just worn out ?

I had a similar problema while ago changed the cable then found it was the speedo itself. borrow one to test this

I had a noisy speedo coming back from Victoria, it eventually shat itself. Pulled it apart when I got home and found lots of metal shavings, get some light machine oil or WD40 into the speedo gears.
