lost oil pressure yesterday, got towed to mates place. Checked there are no blockages, removed sender not pumping out. HELP any simple things I should try

G'day Fred,
Take the distributor out and put a fairly large flat blade screwdriver down the distributor hole so it engages the oil pump then turn it clockwise and see if oil pumps from the oil sender hole.

thanks Ace, removed dizzy found keyway has sheared off. I think oil pump has seized. Do I have to remove engine to replace?Huh

You should be able to remove it with the engine in the car. Drop the sump and it is fairly simply removed - what's more concerning is why it seized in the 1st place.

Don't have an answer for that. Won't know till I get car home it's still 300kms away. Never had oil presure problems before, light went out straight away on start up, never came on, alway sat at 30 to 35 psi while driving. Time will tell.

You didn't have a sudden expulsion of oil before you started it last? Probably not cos that much oil would be easy to notice.

otherwise i will diw wondering, ive never heard of an oil pump freezing when u have full oil??? unless something broke, would be an unusual one though.

OK if you are still alive, the problem was. I will tell you after this short comercial break.



One of th oil pump drive gears is in three pieces. Not the one one the shaft. Will now check a spare I have and install.

Freddy,

That is so odd, I have never seen an oil pump gear fracture before. Was there any sign of debris or other foreign material in the oil pump to have jammed in between the gears to have caused the fracture?

Grey engines did not have full flow oil filtration. Oil feed was picked up from the camshaft plugs along the distributor side of the block. To run a spin on type oil filter you must convert the oil feed system to a full filtration type which involves significant modification to the lubrication system.

I had been thinking of putting full flow filter on mine. Was going to run a new line out of the pump, thru the block wall down low and towards the front tapping a thread thru. Mount a remote filter on the block like the bypass filter and return it back into the oil pressure switch gallery which is where the pump goes into the block anyway. Will need to plug the block where the pump line would go into. I think it would work.

Thoughts anyone or has anyone done it ?

Mark,

PM me your email address and I'll flick you a copy of some info I pulled together on full flow filtration. Alex's work was fantastic, and helped me understand the process better. I then went hunting for some more info (e.g. block drilling versus sump exit), and stuck it into the draft oil filter document (due for release shortly).
