For those of you who have thought about putting a set of these on your vehicle, a bit of advice. I can't afford proper white walls but like the look. I can source sets of the 2 sizes described below quite easily for about A$80 odd.

I put a set of 2.5" (63mm) flappers on the car last year - looked good. Problem is that even at modest speeds (I would generally travel at 80-90kmh, rarely up to 100kmh on a freeway) they become damaged rather quickly. Have a look:

Close up shows the little splits that develop and eventually tear holes in the plastic - just too much "flapping":

I have now put a set of 1 3/4" (45mm) on and found that they sit much better and still look pretty good - I think a better proportion than the 2.5" ones. Time will tell over the summer and the driving I will be doing to see how they hold up. Here's how they look just fitted:

Here's the look with the bling put on:

These are designed for conventional crossply tyres and aren't really suited to radial tyres as they have more flexible softer sidewalls

Out of interest Paul, can you get 640 x 13" Crossply tyres over there? they have dried up over here

They used to be available here through Antique Tyres but they keep saying they are waiting on a shipment from abroad that never seem to arrive

I prefer the wider ones, I have a new set in the shed, just waiting for the correct tyres

Cheers, Gary

Yes, Gary - can get crossply tyres. What size do you want? BF Goodrich 560x13 blackwalls would be about $150 each and 2 1/2" whitewalls in that size about $300 each. The sizes go from around 520x13 up to 725x13. This is the same place I bought the flappers from. We have a 10% club discount with them as well but I suspect the shipping to you would be a little high! But still, if you really wanted them, where there is a will there is a way - shipping by sea in a part container load could be reasonable.
