hi guy i have an fc wagon with a badly rusted floor.so the floor has to be replaced anyway. i want to build a full chassis for it and run airbag Hot rod suspension and commodore brakes. All panels and interior are going original 50's style with the dubble bench seats and plenty of chrome.

Now for engine i have both a 350 chev and a rb30. both need rebuilds but the 350 is worked with mickey T pistons,  straight cut gears, big cam etc. the rb 30 is standard but i would turbo it if i use it.

Please give me your opinon Carbied 350 Chev or Turbo Rb30?

Customholden,

Personnally, I'd go for the Chev. But this will also depend on where you are from, as each state has different rules. Someone with a little more knowledge with this may be able to comment as well.

 i would go the nissan motor . i have a rb20det in my sedan and its reliable cheap to run and quiet when you are on the highway and the power is there when you want too put the foot down cheers wiggs

If you have a look at FCRB30 wagon in the project cars you will see one in there... Or you can have a look at mine "365 days" to see the holden 5litre conversion with floor mods.

If you are going "old school" keep it "old school" and fit the Chev if rego allows of course.

i am starting to go towards the Rb30T engine as use it as a daily driver here in Qld. i know i can get the 350 regoed if i go full chassis, or put my old 253 in for v8 reg. i know it will be a lot of work no matter wich way i go but i am an automotive bodybuilder by trade and have a fab shop i can use. i will check out the other project cars and see how you guys have done it before. cheers Tony

Hi Tony,

In QLD I was told that the biggest engine I could put in the ute was a 306... But the engineer also said that you would get through with a 308 Holden motor. All done on the weight formula. Or you could turbo charge any motor up to 4.0litres. Am not sure if they like the re chassisied idea anymore, I had heard that those rules were changing but I am not sure on this one.

Best bet would be to give Lindsay Stone from Livingstone automotive in Townsville... He is the guy that I have used for both of my vehicles.

I am not sure of the weight difference between the wagon and the ute or panelvan. The number was given to me for the ute.

Not much help to you I am afraid, but there is someone you can contact at least.

If I was starting from scratch there's no way I'd go down the RB30 path again, I know they can be made to fit but they are an extremely long engine which creates a multitude of problems, personally I'd go the V6 option, they are small engine that fit's easily into the FE/FC engine bay with not too much modification, and has plenty of power.

there's lots of ifs buts and maybes V6 is small but have to deal with fabricated sumps (which can be bought) i've done a couple of holden V8s in FB/EKs and they are simple to put in, dam near a bolt in fit once rack is done and both have had pipes that run down where they're suposed to not out the inner guards last one even still had the battery in the factory position
