I haven't restored a deflector but I have removed paint from a freezer door of an old refrigerator I am redoing. These are clear plastic and painted from the inside. I used a product called Polly S  Easy-Lift-Off  paint and decal remover. It claims to be safe of most types of plastic and will remove most paint. Like anything it should be tried on a small area that wont be seen in case it has a bad reaction to the plastic.

Hope this is of help.
