Hi Team,
With the master cylinder, are there rubber kits generally avail for reconditioning them. Are the cylinders essentially the same from FE to HR? Also, the brake fluid reservoirs (plastic vs metal)...what's the story with them?
I have a master cyl in good nick, just need new rubbers for primary and secondary pistons...and a new reservoir.
(I am installing disc brakes and know I need a master cyl without the valve at the end of the body that maintains line pressure for drum brakes)
cheers....Brad

Hi Brad. If you need any parts/reco work done on brakes I would suggest going through Perth Brake Parts. They're in the Welshpool area and are very helpful.

G'DAy Brad
The rubber kits are available from all brake shops, repco and the likes of Super Cheap, the cylinder's are really easy to rebuild. All the master cylinders are the same and the clutch master cyclinder is the same as well.
When using with disc brakes you just leave the resdual pressure valve out of the end of the master cyclinder.
The metal reservoir was orinigal equipment on the cylinders when new but are no longer available the plastic ones where released on later models and of course do not rust out, but do crack with age.
Instructions for the rebuild of cylinders comes with the rebuild kit from repco and also is in the workshop manuals.
Hope this rabbiting on helps John M

Unfortunately the metal reservoir m/c's do not interchange with the plastic ones. Dont make the mistake of recoing the m/c with the metal top if you dont have a good tin to put onto it. Also you will have to check that the cylinder you use is not pitted or scored inside as it will leak again after not much time. For absolute best results, have the m/c stainless steel sleeved. All brake shops will be able to have this done for you.

Ken, I've heard that the tins are really hard to find in good condition. Is there some way of reconditioning the tins as mine are rats**t? I guess they'd be worth quite a bit these days if they're in good condition?? Does anyone have a fantastic set that they don't want? Cat

Cat, I've heard of 1 chap who cut the tops and bottoms off lots of tins until he got enough good pieces and then rolled up new bodies, soldered the tops to the bottoms and then had them plated. I wouldn't go that far because you can find them at swap meets still. Unfortunately all the ones I have found recently have gone to Kev Woolard in NSW. You could contact him to see if he will part with a pair. Otherwise good hunting at the swap meets!

I send mine to Kev for $5 ea - $80 is ridiculous, you should have accepted the offer. I saw at least 5 at Ballarat swap for between $10 & $20 each but knocked them back as I thought they were too dear !!! If people are interested, I can pick them up in future and pass them on. Ken
