Starter Motors

Hi,

I have got a question /observation with regards to starter motors.Yesterday I was doing a clean up and noticed that I had two different types of bosch starter motors. One had two brushes and one four. Their respective numbers were R27 and R37. They are identical to look at from the outside except when looking at the numbers.

I ask the question in the same vane as the wiper knobs, which starter motor belonged to what? I am assuming if we use the logic of the wiper motors and GMH trying to cut costs that the two brushed motor belonged to the FC. Or was the four bushed motor from a grey further on? Or was it an enhancement which seems logical?

Is there an advantage of using the 4 brushed motor over the 2 brushed.

My understanding is that the four brush starter was used from FB onwards.  The  noticeable differences, I have seen, apart from the model numbers, is the end cap over the brushes.  The two brush model has a square turnover on the end and the four brush model has the rollover slightly rounded.  The later models are blue in colour - EJ I think.  The torque of the four brush is higher and draws less current than the two brush ones. 
Ken can probably give a more accurate answer.

Spot on Keith, the R37 starter covers FB to EJ - according to the books it has a torque of 8.5 ft/lb at 310 amps whilst the FE FC starter achieves 7.75 ft/lbs at 350 amps.
