What is a good strong diff to fit in an FE with the same or close wheel track to the FE the closest I can find is a centura but I thought I would ask the people who have done it before.

Centura is not bad but getting hard to get as a lot of Rodders use them in A models  also early Volvo is OK same wheel bolt pattern..... but the ratios of the centura were usually 2.92 to 1 or 3.00 to 1 which may be a bit high for the FE FC ....I would ask how much horse power does it have to put up with .....and then go from there ....as it is not that dear to get a Commodore VN - VR diff shortened and get a good brake package in the deal ........FC427.....

Wont have too much horsepower will be less than 300 but I dont wish to be stuck with a busted diff.

I think I would go for the shortened V8 Commodore diff. If you break the Centura or Volvo - where are you going to get a replacement in a hurry?

Dont' discount the use of a Hilux or Ford Courier diff.

Cheap, plentiful, lots of ratio's (especially the Hilux type) and quite strong from what I've heard from the LC/LJ guys who use this an a lighter alternative to a 9".

I haven't heard much of the hilux diffs being used.
Is this a real option or are there clear downfalls??

Check out the difference in size between a Bango and a Hilux. A lighter/smaller but still very strong option compared to a 9".

I have a hilux LSD diff in a buggy that has a v6 commodore engine that i plan to use in my fe, but im in country and plenty of them everywhere, but not sure of ratios, will depend if i go for a holden vn/vl box or toyota box etc... I did the measurements and track is same. is drum brake, that should be fine with a light fe in most applications me thinks. but if i didnt have that id probably go shortened commodore. surely a 9 inch is pretty over the top and increases unsprung weight??? there seems to be a fair few volvo ones around but as they say, not as common in your wreckers etc and need to know what your looking for. i found it hard to get ppl who have centura ones to part without the same dollars as a shortened commodore. depends if u want lsd?
