Engineer came over yesterday, down from Townsville to do the Targa Tasnmania. Fixed a seal on his 4wd, then looked at the ute. He had not seen it for about a year and liked what he saw, nothing to redo or re engineer.   Gave me a few more ideas too, but the next time he needs to see it will be when being driven for the final inspection so a very happy camper I am. Continue on I will.

Here are some shots of the seat belt brackets for Blok.






Spoke to the engineer about the bracket when he was here, they measure 3750mm sq to be legal.
Welded in behind the pillar to look neat, and then under the floor.

 Great to hear about the engineer, it makes doing modifications more promising if you want to register it.

what is the thickness of the plates used for the seat belt mounts JB ?

The plates are 7mm x 50mm x 80mm, so the area I had was 4000sq mm.

I have seen some plates that are long and skinny to get the 3750sq mm.

     i was hunting around my shed today and i pulled out some pre-drilled plates with rounded edges that do qualify for area coverage being 50mm x 95mm but the thickness is only 3mm...im thinking that maybe the thickness will let me down...im hoping not cause they would do just nice, i have a few of them, but not enough to double the plates up to increase the thickness...

3mm to thin ??

I would say its too thin because you need to be able to get enough depth of thread for the bolt., would you use a 3mm nut to stop you in an accident?

thicker the better and it has to be 1 piece.

i forgot to mention these are for the floor and pracel shelf mountings, not the pillars, i was going to use HT nuts and bolts to go through the plates...that's the info i got off a installer who does rear seat n belt installs in vans and baby seats... they have the standard plates pretty cheap, but i cant remember how thick they are..i do recall he said the total area of the plate has to equal 3" x 3" in total

does this sound similar to your advise

I am not sure of the thickness you will require for your application, you may need to talk to your engineer about it as any seat modifications require engineering.

Its amazing how much fine dust is made from cast steel, I made the mistake a few days ago of not closing a couple of doors to the house and then began work on the air cond bracket. To say I made a mess is an understatement, not to mention the trouble I got into with Nicki.

I bought a second air cond bracket and cut it up to fit the original one that I had, then took 5 hours to cut, grind, weld, and then do it all again to make it fit into the only spot that the compressor will fit. A tight  spot it was too.
Bought a small gas bottle to heat up the cast steel before welding the 2 pieces together, and here is the result.

I just have to weld on the idler to tension the belt and strengthen the bracket some more to stop fatigue cracking at a later stage.

Thanks RET, the line of thinking is that there are not too many projects that get shown from start to finish in detail. I guess after reading the build books that showed the progress stage by stage and how helpful they were I thought some guys and girls may like it. Some stuff may not be perfect, but I am just having a crack.
