The TNT Transport man just delivered my BRAND NEW W58 SUPRA 5 SPEED GEARBOX of and it looks great I bought a Dellow bellhousing a while ago with a speedo cable for $100  so just need a front yolk and a good clutch and I am in business...Then out with the M20 and in with the W58 ... Has any one tried the short shifter for this box they make in New Zealand Huh?.......FC427.......

didnt know they made a short shift but would be interested in hearing about it, is it only for that particular supra box, and how do i tell the different models?

Mark,

is the short shift the item you mean to move the shifter fwd about 2 inch?
or a short lever for faster action etc.

i used a fwd position adaptor on a celica box before.. just a bolt on item.
but if its a quick shifter, i haven't used one.

Wxx Gear box specifications  http://users.tpg.com.au/users/loats/technical/ma61/gearboxes.html   this site has all the different w series gearboxes with ratios and interchangeability of then .. The shifter is made by a company in New Zealand and it reduces the movement by half they sell through ebay but not listed at the moment also if you plan on using one of the "w' gearboxes it is a good idea to change to a VH or VK Commodore flywheel as it takes the bigger pressure plate and a lot more options are then available for the clutch all the way up to ceramic button clutch for $450 if you run a supercharger. I tried a few different clutch set ups with the M20 and could not get one to handle the supercharged engines torque with out slipping and was always waiting for the box to break thats why the change to the "W58"........FC427.....

Curious how it works?

perhaps moving the pivot of the shifter up thereby lengthening the shift fork?

I made a quick shift for my Gemini once upon a time.. I cut the shifter down by 2 inches and re-welded the threaded part back on.  I thought I was so clever.  Cheesy Cheesy

Ed I am pretty sure that is what they do move the pivot up to change the pivot ratio, the hole thing is made from chrome molly and they sell them to a lot of rally guys about $220 ......FC427.......

Hey FC427, 100% correct on that one , they just put a spacer in and raise the pivot point.
They definately work well, unfortunately  because the w58 is an old box and not overly popular the short shifters are expensive (given later model supra boxes are less than $100).
A 8 inch clutch should be fine (should be able to handle 350 rwhp) , go with a sprung button if you want some streetability.

Honestly mate, they are overpriced however I think that is as cheap as you will find there are other jap brands "C.s" for instance but are around 300+. I gave up trying to find an alternative for my w58 it would be cheaper to get a 1 off made.

it good to know that they are actually out there, slightly O/T but im hoping to extend the shifter on my toyota box as at the moment i have to lean foward a fair bit to change gears ( still with a bench seat Wink )
i know this may be an easy thing to do but is anyone aware of legalities in modifying the shifter or restrictions in height allowed?

Dean I have never herd of any limitations  I have shortened and lengthen put in goose necks etc. many times over the years and never had any concerns from the rego authorities or engineers  .......FC427.......

thanks mark, i would like to get a nice extension on the shifter but was unsure of restrictrictions if any, ie pose a possible threat to occupants.
i would like to present the completed car to rego dudes so i can stick it to " the man" if i ever get pulled up and canaried Grin Wink
