Could anyone advise whether replacing the wind cord (that surrounds each door) is a relatively straight-forward job please? I still have the original trim and it is quite good for its age except for the wind cord which has lost all its colour. Apart from looking a bit ordinary it is also prone to coming out of its recess - previous owner has "Gel Gripped" it back in places. As I have to have a motor trimmer fit a few new springs into the front seat I may as well get the cord done if it is not too big a job. Also, would Rare's be the best place to acquire replacement cord and if so would anyone know which colour would best suit Summit Blue / Cosmos. And is the repro close to the original in appearance etc??

Cheers....Ken

Ken,

Rares don't stock FE windlacing, despite what their website says! They stock the black with silver(?) FC windlace.

The coloured FE windlace is very similar (if not the same) to that used in US GM cars of the period and I understand is available there, I just haven't found the supplier yet. I think Leon Spicer, forum name Leon, sourced all of his trim from there and may be able to help. (FWIW, FE armrests are identical to those used in my 1953 Buick and other early 50s GM cars)

If your trim is original, I would be inclined to stick with the original windlace. I also have a Summit/Cosmos car in which the windlace is in very good condition. It is a fairly nondescript grey colour with the raised areas in darker blue, it is not blue and not bright, so yours may be better than you think. I will send you a photo.

That said I am trying to source brown windlace for my Beige FE, Nev. I will keep you posted....

Cheers

Nev,

Keep us all informed on how you go.  My brown wind lacing is shot in places and I will replace it all if I can get the right coloured stuff.  I would be happy to put in a combined order with you if that were a possibility.  Let me know.

Cheers,
David

Thanks John. The description of your windlace sounds identical to mine so maybe mine is not as faded as I originally thought. It is certainly a non descript greyish colour with raised specks. As Rares does not match the original, and obtaining a close match may be difficult, I am inclined to stick with the original. If you can find the time, a photo would be great just to compare. Otherwise I will check out a few cars at Motorfest. Thanks again for the help.

Hi Ken,
The windlace in your car and Johns car will be the same, mine was also the same before I had to replace it because it all perished.
