There is a hole to the right of the ignition key in the dash - what goes there? Was it just a blank for some optional extra or is there another reason?

I would say that at some stage it has had a retro fit handbrake warning light fitted. It was not uncommon at all to fit a warning lamp in the 60's especially when they were available with EJ EH models. They could be easily fitted to the FE FC handbrake assembly. They come up from time to time on Ebay etc.
Ps Well done on your purchase!!!
Cheers

i had a hole drilled there for the "cruise control on" light.
added lights and switches were nothing uncommon since these cars left the factory pretty basic, when i got my fc it had about 4 light and switch holders under the dash with nothing hooked up.

That is the correct spot to fit the electric fan-switch for a Nasco Warmaride heater. You had to drill it out though, that panel was blank ex-factory.

I've seen an article (I think Alex posted it) from a British magazine testing out the new Holden that they had imported. It had a bunch of accessories fitted including this one, but IIRC the reviewers were allowed to labour under the misapprehension that these were all 'standard equipment'.

If I can find it I'll post a link.

cheers

I have the same hole in my dash but  it was for the switch for the windscreen washer. Just a simple push and water would squirt onto the screen.
