I'm buying a HR front end for my car and have the choice of HR or Torana discs. I was wondering what are the advantages or disadvantages of each.

If your talking about the whole stub assembly for a LC to LJ torana if you use those it will give you a wider front track. This is usually inapropriate for earlier holdens(up to EK's) because you have trouble with tyres scrubbing on guards, My choice has always been HR discs and calipers if you can get a good set and I like running a nice set of 7" widies as well. Torana disc and calipers sit well in HD and HR's but not really on anything earlier. IMO

Dave - advantage - way better performing brakes - especially if used with mastervac booster setup.  You wont get an engineers report in Victoria with HR disc brakes if you are running a V8, OK for a red 6.
Disadvantage - pushes the wheel out as Addo has said, but not so far that you can't get round it.  I have UC brakes on dropped stubs with stock FE wheel rims and 6 inch tyres with no scrub problems at all.  But I can't run a wider wheel.

Thanks Ken- I'll probably go with the Torana discs then. I've only got 6 (or maybe 7) inch torana rims with 185s on them at the moment so probably shouldn't rub (in an EJ also). I'm only putting in a 149 but you never know what crazy idea I'll hatch in future.

Not sure what a mastervac booster is. I'm planning to convert to a dual circuit master cylinder (HQ type) using a CRS adaptor. They told me with this setup I only need to boost the front brakes and can leave the rears unboosted with the standard wheel cylinders. They assured me the HQ master doesn't have a proportioning valve and this should work fine. Booster is (remote) VH40. Does this sound right?
