G'day all, do the 186 and 202 (reds) have the same shape sumps?

Sump varies a bit depending on what vehicle it was fitted into, eg Torana and Kingswood sumps aren't the same.  For fitting into an FE or FC, you want the EH sump shape.

Hope that helps.

cheers

Hey Rusty.
You need the EH sump and pickup. If the 186 is in your FC now, you need to use that 1 as it would probably be the EH version.
The pickups are also different for each sump as they are shaped to pick up the oil from the lowest part of the pan.

Alex

Are the pickups interchangable between 186 and 202 motors?

Again, it depends what the motor came out of.

The design of the pickup needs to suit the sump, and the shape of the sump is determined by the steering and cross-member of the vehicle.

That's why people generally sell them as a pair.  To put a red in an FE or FC, you need the EH sump and pickup.  I have heard there is a particular Torana configuration that also fits, but I'm not sure which, and it might only suit R&P steering setups.

cheers

My bad, sorry.  Yes they are.

In NSW these days if you go over 200ci (even those 2 more cubes) you need collapsible steering column and assorted other mods.  That's why Geoff_K pulled the 202 out and put a 186 in to register his modified FE (BAY-255) for the Nats.

You don't have that rule in Vic, presumably.

cheers
